Does NARCAN® Expire? Everything You Need to Know About Naloxone Shelf Life

Does NARCAN® Expire? Everything You Need to Know About Naloxone Shelf Life

If you've had NARCAN® sitting in a drawer for a while, or you've just found an old device and aren't sure whether it's still good – this blog answers that question clearly and honestly.

Does NARCAN® Expire?

Yes, NARCAN® does have an expiration date, printed on every device's packaging. The FDA and the manufacturer advise following the expiration date printed on the product's packaging and labeling.

Here's what the current shelf life looks like for NARCAN® 4mg nasal spray:

  • Produced after January 17, 2024 –  shelf life of 4 years from manufacture date

  • Produced before January 17, 2024 –  shelf life of 3 years from manufacture date

This is the result of two FDA-approved shelf life extensions over the years. The original NARCAN® 4mg nasal spray was approved with a 2-year shelf life. In August 2020, the FDA extended it to 3 years. Then in January 2024, at the FDA's request, manufacturer Emergent BioSolutions extended it again to 4 years  but only for newly manufactured products going forward.

So the device in your hand right now may have either a 3-year or 4-year shelf life depending on when it was made. Check the expiration date printed on the box.

What Is the NARCAN® Shelf Life In Practice?

When you buy or receive NARCAN® today, you can generally expect:

  • If purchased after early 2024 – approximately 4 years until expiration

  • If purchased before 2024 – approximately 3 years until expiration

The expiration date is printed clearly on both the outer box and the device itself. Check both and check them regularly. Setting a reminder every 6 months to check your device takes less than a minute and makes sure you're never caught with an expired device when it matters.

Can You Use Expired NARCAN®?

This is the question most people actually want answered – and it deserves a straight, honest response.

The FDA advises following the expiration date on the packaging. That is the official guidance, and it is what we recommend.

That said, public health research has repeatedly found that naloxone remains chemically stable and potent beyond its printed expiration date. Multiple studies have assessed naloxone stability and found it retains significant potency past the labelled expiration. The overwhelming consensus from public health organizations is that using expired naloxone in an emergency is better than using nothing at all.

So, if you are in a genuine overdose emergency and the only NARCAN® available is expired, use it. An expired device is not guaranteed to work at full potency, but it is far better than doing nothing while someone stops breathing.

However, do not rely on expired NARCAN® as your everyday carry. Replace it as soon as possible, and never intentionally use an expired device when an unexpired one is available.

How to Check Your NARCAN® Expiration Date

Simple steps to check your naloxone expiration date:

Step 1 – Look at the outer box. The expiration date is printed on the bottom or side panel, usually formatted as MM/YYYY.

Step 2 – Check the device itself. The expiration date is also printed directly on the nasal spray device.

Step 3 – If the date has passed, replace it. Contact your pharmacy, a harm reduction organization, or your local health department. In many areas, NARCAN® replacement is available free of charge.

How to Store NARCAN® Correctly

Proper storage extends the effective life of your NARCAN® and helps ensure it performs as expected when you need it.

According to the FDA, NARCAN® 4mg nasal spray should be stored:

  • At room temperature – between 59°F and 77°F (15°C to 25°C)

  • Away from direct sunlight

  • Away from excessive heat or cold

Avoid leaving it in a hot car, a freezing garage, or a bathroom cabinet where heat and humidity fluctuate. A consistent, moderate environment is best.

This is one of the practical reasons a carry case matters – nCase Lite keeps your NARCAN® with you throughout your day rather than sitting in a glove box that can reach extreme temperatures.
