What Is neffy® Used For?

neffy® is an epinephrine nasal spray indicated for the emergency treatment of Type I allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, in adult and pediatric patients who weigh 15 kg or greater.

In plain terms – neffy® is used for severe allergic emergencies. It delivers epinephrine, the only FDA-approved medicine for anaphylaxis treatment, through a nasal spray instead of a needle injection.

Type I severe allergic reactions are serious and potentially life-threatening events that can occur within minutes of exposure to an allergen and require immediate treatment with epinephrine, the only FDA-approved medication for these reactions.

What Is Anaphylaxis – And Why Does It Need Immediate Treatment?

Anaphylaxis is a severe, sudden allergic reaction that can affect multiple body systems at once – airways, blood pressure, heart rate, and skin and can become life-threatening within minutes. According to the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI), anaphylaxis requires immediate treatment with epinephrine. Antihistamines and other allergy medications are not adequate first-line treatment for anaphylaxis.

Common triggers include:

• Food allergens – peanuts, tree nuts, shellfish, milk, eggs

• Insect stings – bees, wasps, hornets, fire ants

• Medications – antibiotics, aspirin, NSAIDs

• Latex

• Exercise (in rare cases)

neffy® Doses – Who Is It Approved For?

neffy® is available in two weight-based doses:

neffy® 2mg - for adults and children weighing at least 66 pounds (30kg).
neffy® 1mg - for children weighing between 33 and 66 pounds (15-30kg).

The FDA has since removed the age restriction for the 1mg dose, so it can now be used in any child who meets the approved weight range.

What Is neffy® Nasal Spray not used for?

Treatment for Anaphylaxis – What Happens After You Use neffy®

Using neffy® is not the end of the emergency – it's the beginning of the response.

Step 1 –  Call 911 immediately. Always call 911 first, before or while using neffy®. In an emergency, always call 911.

Step 2  – Administer neffy®. At the first sign of a severe allergic reaction  - don't wait for symptoms to worsen.

Step 3 – Give a second dose if needed. Repeat dosing in the same nostril was greater in exposure than dosing once in each nostril. If symptoms continue or return after the first dose, a second dose may be administered. Always carry two devices.

Step 4 – Go to the emergency room. Even after successful treatment for anaphylaxis, a biphasic reaction –  a second wave of symptoms – can occur hours later. ER monitoring is always required.
